During your wedding day, nobody will spend more time with you than your photographer and videographer. You want to make sure you enjoy the company of your photographer and can trust that they will be able to capture all those amazing moments that you can look back at and laugh, cry and reminisce about.

Below I put together some popular questions to ask potential wedding photographers. Some of the questions might seem basic, but they will give you all the information you need to see if they will be the perfect fit for your wedding day.

This might seem obvious, but if you are looking at a larger photography company, the person that you want to film your wedding might not be available. You don’t want your photography company to contract out your wedding to an inexperienced photographer that might not be able to deliver the quality of images that you are expecting.

Describe your Photography Style?

Every photographer has a different style of capturing images and the wedding day. Are the more of a documentary style, where they stand back and let things play out. Do they get more involved and have you pose and recreate images? Ask them to describe their style and give you some examples from previous work to see if it fits.

Have you shot at my venue before?

This is not a deal breaker, but it’s nice if the photographer is familiar with your wedding venue. They will more prepared to find portrait locations, be friendly with the staff, and understand how the day will play out.

What’s included in your wedding package?

Most photographers have a variety of package options, and extras that you can add on. How many hours are included? do you include a second photographer? Are their travel costs? How long will it take to get my photos? Will I get sneak peeks? Do you charge extra to purchase the prints? Can i add additional hours to my wedding day?

These are just a few of the questions that you are going to want to ask.

What happens in the event of an emergency?

This is more pertinent in times of covid. But what happens if they are unable to photograph a wedding because of an emergency? Make sure they have a solid Plan B in place, and you feel comfortable with their backup plan.

Can we view full galleries of your recent weddings?

A photographers website is a collection of their most recent and best work. Ask them if you can get a sneak peek at a full wedding gallery. This will give you an idea of the quality of a full day of images, and help you make the decision if they are consistent throughout the day. They might excel in taking detail shots, but struggle with posing, or capturing raw emotions. This will be something that you can pick up on within a full wedding gallery.

How long have you been shooting wedding? How many weddings?

This gives you an idea of how experienced they are with weddings. This doesn’t mean they will be better than somebody who is newer to photography, but chances are they have encountered more hiccups throughout the wedding day, and are better equipped to handle anything that goes wrong.
