Typically, you want to start 12-18 months prior to your wedding to allow you time to get everything completed.  This includes time to find your wedding venue and dress, choose your wedding party, book your caterer and so much more.  Having more time will also allow you time to enjoy each other and spending quality time together without every second being focused on wedding planning.
